Starting ABA therapy can feel like a big step — especially when you’re not sure what the first stages will look like. One of the most important parts of getting started is the ABA assessment.

This evaluation helps the BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) create a treatment plan tailored to your child’s unique strengths, needs, and goals. Understanding this process can help you feel more confident and prepared.

What Is an ABA Assessment?

An ABA assessment is a structured evaluation conducted by a BCBA to determine your child’s current skills, areas for growth, and specific support needs.

The process includes:

  • Interviews with caregivers
  • Direct observation of your child in familiar settings
  • Standardized tools like:
    • Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales
    • ABLLS-R (Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills – Revised)

The BCBA may also review reports from schools, therapists, or doctors to get a complete picture.

What Happens During the Assessment?

  • The BCBA spends time observing your child’s communication, social skills, play, daily living skills, and behavior patterns.
  • Caregiver interviews provide insight into your child’s routines, preferences, and challenges.
  • Parents are encouraged to share how their child responds at home — this context is vital for building a meaningful plan.

Caregiver Training: Your Role in the Process

Even before therapy begins, caregiver involvement is key. BCBAs may schedule parent-only sessions to:

  • Teach strategies like visual schedules and prompting/fading.
  • Allow practice time without distractions.
  • Build confidence so parents can support skill development from day one.

After the Assessment: Treatment Plan & Insurance Approval

Once the assessment is complete, the BCBA creates a treatment plan outlining:

  • Therapy goals
  • Intervention strategies
  • Recommended therapy hours per week

This plan is submitted to your insurance provider for review, which may take up to 45 days. Regular sessions begin after approval.

Why the Assessment Matters

Research confirms that individualized, data-driven ABA plans lead to stronger outcomes. The assessment ensures your child’s therapy is:

  • Evidence-based (per NCAEP 2020 Report)
  • Personalized (not one-size-fits-all)
  • Grounded in best practices from the National Autism Center’s Standards Project
